Stop Rambling: Use the Power of 3

Some people are born ramblers. Others are prone to ramble when they feel passionate about a topic. Still others ramble when they are called to speak upon an intricate, long-term project. When you find yourself in danger of rambling, call upon the “Power of 3.”

For example, think about a question and answer (Q&A) session after a presentation. Since you can’t prepare a specific answer for every question imaginable, and since you have an abundance of information on your topic, it can be difficult to answer a person’s question concisely. You are in danger of rambling!

Prevent rambling by answering complex questions in sets of three. For example, begin an answer like this, “Three main factors lead us to change the out-of-pocket expense for health care….”

If you begin an answer with a promise of three, you’ll come up with a three-pronged statement, and, in the process, you will keep your statement short, concise, and on-target. This might seem like a risky technique to try, but it works for most people—almost like magic.

Experiment with the “Power of 3” in one of your next conversations. Give it a try. You’ll be amazed at this technique’s power to keep your answers short and on-target. The “Power of 3” will become a tool you own—for conversations, for presentations, for interviews, and for tough Q&A sessions.

Stop rambling: you’ve got the “Power of 3!”
